Head of Patent Practice at PATENTUS Aleksey Mikhaylov commented on the introduction of the 14th package of EU sanctions, which for the first time affected the rights of Russians to intellectual property: "The Russian economy is unlikely to feel any impact of these sanctions. The flow of applications from Russia to EU countries was negligible even before 2022.”

According to Aleksey, from 2010 to the end of 2020, the number of applications for inventions and utility models from Russian applicants filed with the European Patent Office or patent offices of EU countries was approximately 400 per year.

At the same time, the lawyer believes that hypothetical symmetrical sanctions against applicants from the EU could affect approximately 3,000–4,000 applications (including Eurasian ones). This is much more than the application flow from Russia.
